First impressions matter

Have you ever started a new job only to feel completely lost and uncertain about what to expect? I certainly have, and unfortunately, it didn't end well. My first day at a remote job was a chaotic mess—I had no clear start time, a calendar with only one vague meeting, and an inbox flooded with overwhelming emails.

Yet, on the flip side, I've also experienced the polar opposite: starting a new role where I felt immediately welcomed and valued. Clear instructions for my first day, a thoughtfully curated welcome package, and a thorough understanding of my role from the start made all the difference. Transparent expectations empowered me to perform my job confidently and effectively.

It turns out, I'm not alone in these experiences. Last summer, my Allboarder co-founder Mariah and I interviewed numerous individuals who recently underwent onboarding processes. The consensus was alarming: many new hires embark on their first day with little to no idea of what to expect. Without clear goals or guidance, they're left feeling anxious and questioning their decision to join the company.

Our research, combined with personal experiences, revealed clear examples of positive onboarding practices. Detailed first-day instructions, including start times, dress codes, and necessary preparations, were crucial. Additionally, receiving a personalized swag box before starting—a gesture that goes beyond generic company merchandise—significantly enhanced the onboarding experience.

But positive onboarding experiences extend beyond mere material items. Knowing when and where the first meeting is scheduled, along with any necessary preparations, sets the tone for a productive start. These examples underscore the importance of effective onboarding in fostering excitement and readiness among new employees.

Navigating the onboarding process can be challenging, but it doesn't have to be. If you want your new hires to say "I know exactly what to do" instead of "what did I just do," we're here to help.
